YOUTH WEIGHT CONTROL PROGRAM and YOUTH ATHLETIC CONDITIONING PROGRAM

Youth Weight Control Program
Designed to educate and motivate children in understanding the way their bodies respond to nutrition and exercise. By understanding these concepts and achieving realistic and obtainable goals, children are given a sense of empowerment to make changes. We emphasize the development of good habits, making educated decisions and finding enjoyable activities. Adolescence is a critical time to lay the foundation for physical activity and choose proper eating habits that will last a lifetime.

It is no secret that OBESITY in this country has grown at a staggering rate. A new study released on March 11, 2004 by the American Journal of Medical Association gives a clear picture of how this epidemic effects our youth. The study reveals that obesity is close to becoming the leading preventable cause of death in this county. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that death due to poor diet and physical inactivity rose by 33 percent over the past decade and may soon overtake tobacco as the leading preventable cause of death. It also indicates that 15 percent of children and adolescents ages 6-19 years are seriously overweight or obese. This number has nearly tripled since the early 1970's. Type 1 Diabetes among children has propelled this increase in obesity and has tripled since the 1980's. In addition, Type II Diabetes is becoming visible in the lives of children as well. This is a direct result of obesity and beta cells failing in childhood rather than adulthood, making the term Adult Onset Diabetes (Type II Diabetes) obsolete.

Personally, this crisis is very dear to Patrick. His daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 14. Patrick has spent the last 7 ½ years learning, in order to understand this disease both at home and professionally.

Obese children ages 10 -13 years are reported to have a 70% likelihood of obesity persisting into adulthood. There is more at stake than body image and physical appearance. Presently, we do not understand the consequences of youth obesity in this country. To address this problem at early onset will help develop our youth into healthy adults. Give your child or grandchild the gift of a healthier future. Help them to be able to help themselves. With 1 in 5 children in the U.S being overweight we will not truly realize the crisis for years to come. This program is an excellent stepping stone to our Youth Athletic Conditioning Program.

Patrick is a Member of the American Diabetes Association's Youth Initiative Committee. He also works with Children's Hospital. During the summer months, he helps educate and motivate children at the American Diabetes Association and Donovan McNabb Summer Camp for youth with Diabetes.

Testimonial
Testimonial for P.T.T.’s Patrick Mulhern

My name is Mike Cantor, and I am 15 1/2 years old. I started working with Patrick Mulhern, a personal trainer from  P.T.T., in May of 2005. When I started working with Patrick, I was 5' 8” and weighed 219 pounds. I was not able to run in my Physical Education classes or do push-ups, which was very embarrassing for me. In the three months that I have been working with Patrick, I have lost more than 25 pounds! For the first time in my life, I am no longer embarrassed to take off my shirt at the beach or pool, and can run much more easily now and do push-ups. Patrick helped me to explore different sports and activities like boxing, weightlifting, use of an exercise ball, and cycling, which I have been able to incorporate into my daily life.

Patrick also taught me about nutrition so that I am able to make better food choices now. By making better, more nutritious food choices, I can eat more food than I ever thought I’d be able to, and still lose weight.
I never thought I’d be able to lose so much weight and get more physically fit, but with Patrick’s help, understanding, and constant encouragement and support, he helped me to make it happen!!!  And, he made it fun, too!!!  If you feel discouraged about your weight and fitness like I once did, then try working with Patrick.  He made a big difference in helping me to reach my fitness goals, and I’m sure he’ll be able to help you, too!!

Youth Athletic Conditioning Program

This particular program is designed to educate kids between the ages of 10 to 16 years old. We focus on basic nutrition, diet and exercise. We lay down the proper exercise techniques post-puberty to capitalize on the earliest and best athletic development. This concept is the same concept used in developing the Olympic Gymnastics Team. By employing this concept we add years of athletic ability and experience to their development. When the hormonal transition to puberty occurs, children have already grasped the muscle memory and coordination to begin a safe strength training routine. By applying the same disciplines taught in martial arts, we help build confidence and motivate children to succeed in sports, school and the many challenges life brings.

Dawn Rumovitz, Patrick Mulhern and Paul Cullura. Paul is now ranked 31 in the country of Long Snappers in High School and other grade levels by Ray Guy and the American Football Specialist Inc.

Being a father of three, Patrick fully understands the comfort level that must exist in allowing any adult to interact with your child. He has trained children over the last seven years both at the YMCA and  Bristol Karate Club. Patrick and the rest of his staff have been cleared by the Department of Public Welfare, CHILDLINE AND ABUSE REGISTRY. Copies of clearence and references of past and present clientsare available upon request.
